CONCERT LIGHTING

The correct lighting for concerts and band performances is very important, as lighting helps to create an atmosphere and mood, enhancing the artists' onstage presence and giving the audience a rewarding visual experience.

Concert Lighting can include the traditional bars of par cans, multipars, blinders or strobes, followspots, intelligent lighting including moving head lights, as well as profiles and fresnels and an array of other types of lighting.

These lights can be hung in a number of different methods. They can be rigged onto large trussing structures known as ground supports or on smaller truss, towerlifts or winchups supports. Alternatively truss uprights are also used as well as pushups with t-bars or from existing bars installed in a venue.

Par cans, multipars and 'wash' style intelligent lights including Mac 300s, 600s and 700 Washes are used to light the stage area so that the performers can be seen as well as utilising different colours to keep the show interesting and vibrant.

Blinders or strobes can be used to highlight a particularly dramatic part of a song or to finish off the set with a big ending.

Intelligent lights can also be programmed to create particular patterns and moods or to focus attention on a particular area. How about all the moving lights swinging around to land on the drummer for their big solo?

Fixed profiles can be focused on a certain position or performer , for example the keyboard player or backup singer that stays in one spot.

A followspot is a larger type of profile that is used to highlight artists including singers or dancers that move around the stage. The followspot is normally placed on a stand and is then controlled by a followspot operator. In addition to the features of a profile, followspots also have an inbuilt iris that allows the size of the circular beam of light projected to be reduced. Coloured gel filters are also able to be used to alter the colour of the light to achieve changing effects.
